India goes gaga over Gagan Narang- Sports

LONDON: Gagan Narang is a tall, portly, fair man with red cheeks. He looks like a successful businessman with a relaxed, nonchalant air about him.
The 29-year-old had serious business to attend to on Monday morning. He came to the Royal Artillery Barracks at 9am near Woolswich Arsenal with his air rifle in tow at the 10m hall, and made it do some serious talking at station No. 15.
Three hours later, he was in the final hall and went through a roller coaster ride before firing his last shot and then turning around to wave in relief as a packed hall roared in thunderous approval.
The man from Hyderabad had got that "huge stone off my chest" on his way to clinching India's first medal at the London Games here, a priceless bronze. Beijing gold medallist and defending champion Abhinav Bindra failed to make the final, slipping in the final series with three 9s, succumbing to time pressure.
Narang had won the Asian gold, the Commonwealth gold and even the World championship gold. This was what he wanted desperately. His eyes had spoken volumes four years ago in Beijing when he tied for the eight spot but missed the final berth on a count-back. "My time will come", they said. Well, there were no countbacks on Monday, no nerves, no misgivings -- just plain, simple fearless shooting. And Narang's eyes were shining in relief when he walked out into the mixed zone, a huge smile on his face.
He started off slowly, with perfect scores (100) in the first two series in qualification. Bindra was already finishing his third round. He was fourth and Bindra 10th. Soon, Bindra moved up to seventh after the fourth series while Gagan stumbled. He missed his seventh and last shots in the third series for a 98 and slipped to the 11th spot.
His coach Stanislas Lapidus said something, and he nodded and was back at his business. He was back at No. 6 after the fourth series of 100. He clung on it as the countdown began. "10 minutes to go," said the referee. That was enough for him to finish his series with another perfect score. 598/600 was a brilliant score and he was third in the qualification. He has done the perfect bit (600/600) before but this was a different stage altogether. Bindra had by then picked up his rifle and walked away.
With qualification scores added in the finals, Narang had given himself a shot at the gold. The first two - Italy's Nicolo Campriani and Romania's Alin George Modoveanu - were just a point ahead.
The final, comprising of 10 shots each, swung like a yo-yo. Narang started with a 10.7 and the crowd roared as he moved up to the second spot. His next shot was a poor 9.7 and he was down to fourth.
He then followed it up with 10.6, a 10.7 and 104 and was third, just 0.1 point behind the Italian. He slipped to fourth again after a 9.9 with his seventh spot. Tension was mounting and Narang shot a shocking 9.5.
"It's over man," said an agonizing journalist sitting in the front row. Well, it was not. The others too succumbed to pressure. Narang followed it with a 10.3 and with China's Tao Wang and Dutchman Peter Hellenbrand breathing down his neck, he finished with a 10.7, kick-starting celebrations in the hall packed with Indian journalists, fans and officials.
Narang, unlike Bindra did not hide his emotions. He waved, blew kisses and smiled on the podium like a young boy who had got a long cherished prize - it was a coveted medal and long due.
Critics, these past few years, made him a medal contender and then hanged him saying he was mentally not tough enough. He went into a shell four months ago, refusing to talk to journalists. He refused to reply to mails from Hanover before coming to London. On Monday, he was willing to talk to anyone who chased him, hugged him, kissed him. As he later said, this medal has made him complete.

Review: Apple's new Mountain Lion operating system-Tech News

Review: Apple's new Mountain Lion operating systemNEW YORK: I didn't need to spend a lot of time with the new Mac operating system to see that phones and tablet computers have won out over personal computers at Apple.

Mobile devices are already responsible for the bulk of Apple's sales and profits. Now, Apple is making the new Mac system even more like theiOS software that powers its iPhones and iPads. It's also casually dropping the "Mac" name from the Mac OS X operating software, though computers will still be called Macs, not "Super-sized iPads."

The new system, formally OS X 10.8 and dubbed Mountain Lion, went on sale Wednesday as a $19.99 download from Apple's App Store. It builds on the previous system, Lion, which came out last July.

Mountain Lion is made for a world where your computer is just one of your computing devices, along with your iPhone and your iPad. Apple wants to make it easier to switch from one to the other, several times a day.

It's already easy to switch between iPhone and iPad. For instance, songs and apps you buy on an iPad will automatically pop up on your iPhone through Apple's iCloud online-storage service. Lion has some iCloud features, but Mountain Lion really brings the Mac into the iPhone-iPad family.

That's what I like most about Mountain Lion. It borrows a lot from its mobile cousin.

The Mac already had such mobile-like features as the ability to zoom in or out on a MacBook by pinching your fingers on its touchpad. Mountain Lion goes a lot further:

* A notification center slides out from the right of the screen to offer calendar reminders and the latest mail items. It mimics, down to the background color, layout and font, the way you get Facebook updates, news alerts and other notices on your iPhone.

* The Mac's iChat app has been scrapped in favor of Messages, which is made phone friendly by incorporating the iMessage service for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users to exchange texts, photos and video. Now you can send messages from your Mountain Lion computer to your mobile friends, or reach another Mountain Lion user from your phone. The way conversations are presented feels more like texting than instant messaging.
* Mountain Lion borrows a "Share" button from iPhone and iPad apps. The iPhoto image organizer on Lion had that, but it's now built into other apps such as the Safari Web browser and the Preview document reader. The options change depending on the app. In Safari, for instance, you can send a Web page by email or post a link on Twitter. In Preview, you can share a photo on Flickr or add it to iPhoto.

London Olympics 2012 : Google doodles for archery competition- Tech News

London Olympics 2012 : Google doodles for archery competitionNEW DELHI: Google's spirit for London Olympics 2012 seems to be unending as it put up a new sport-centred doodle on its homepage on Saturday. As the Olympics kicks off with archery competition after the opening ceremony, Google has dedicated a doodle to the sport.

The London 2012 archery is the second Google doodle in this week to show its enthusiasm towards Olympics. The doodle displays a female archer aiming at an archery board, where the target is Go'o'gle. The Olympic Archery competition at the London 2012 Summer Olympics is being held at Lord's Cricket Ground, which has long been seen as the home of cricket.

The search giant had tweeted, "Hooray for sports! Stay tuned over the next 16 days for all the #GoogleDoodle fun," thus hinting that there may be a doodle on all days on the Games.

From India, a team of 81 athletes, which comprises 6 archers, participated at the Olympics. The 6 Indian archers are: Rahul BanerjeeTarundeep RaiJayanta TalukdarL Bombayla Devi, Deepika Kumari and Chekrovolu Swuro.

On Friday, Google displayed a doodle depicting five athletes on track holding the letters of Google which also symbolises the logo of Olympics. The doodle features the sports football, basketball, swimming, fencing, running, and javelin throw.

The London Olympics 2012, officially the Games of the XXX Olympiadis, started on 27 July, 2012 and will end on August 12, 2012.

Kyaa Super Kool Hai Hum- Movie Reviews

Critic's Rating:3/5

Direction: Sachin Yardi
Genre: Comedy
Duration: 2 hours 18 minutes
Story: A dumb & dumber situation arises when a struggling actor chases his lady-love to Goa; along with his jobless DJ buddy who owns a pug that shags for a living.

Movie Review: Disclaimer: This review is A-rated. Purely 'adult'erated even. Keeping with the flavour of the film - a series of gags on 'dildo-la-re' puns, doggie shots, bitches (read: beaches), bikinis and bared bums, sizes ('bade acche lagte hain' anyone?) and sex-changes.

Tusshar Kapoor (Adi) is a struggling actor, who dreams of making a grand debut in Bollywood with films like 'Chingham', 'Adi'das (Devdas), 'Bra-One' 'Ekta-Tiger' etc, but Mr. Dufus ends up with embarrassing teleshopping commercials for vibra weight-loss, constipation remedies and body-whitening creams (it hilariously turns him from Afro to Blond). He believes planet Rahu has turned his career into Rahul Roy (ouch!), and is advised by a Tarot reader that the only one who has the power to change his destiny is a lady-love. Cue for Simran (Neha Sharma). Sid (Riteish Deshmukh) is a DJ (read: hard 'Dicks' Jockey); who's grown up 'bajaoing' (music), and living off his pug, 'Suckru', the Vicky Donor of Animal Kingdom, who dutifully mates to His Master's (Voice) Music; for money. The 'threesome' take off to Goa, where Adi swears he will 'macho-doonga' (ie: flaunt his machismo with a semi bared-butt like John Abraham) to win over his girl. On the other hand, Sid risks losing his manhood at gay bars, while model-girl Anu (Sarah Jane Dias) falls for him, and Suckru gets busy on the Goa 'bitches' (Oops: Beaches). There are weirder specimens on this riotous ride. Mr.Marlowe (Anupam Kher), who's obsessed with Bollywood memorabilia. From Vidya Balan's red 'dirty' blouse, to Ramu kaka's (Sholay) hand-soap; only 'coz Thakur didn't have hands (sic); More weirdos coming up - fat-ass, dope-head Trippy (Kevin Dave) and the vile Baba 3G (Chunky Pandey) who communicates with the 'higher beings' through broadband. 'Stand-up' to applause if you please, but there's more coming your way. Mental stimulation (or masturbation), whatever!!!

Tusshar Kapoor is quite a 'master of his domain', we mean the comedy genre, alright. Riteish Deshmukh adds to this melee with his canny knack for comedy, and together the boys tune their comedy timing with tact, if not precision. Neha Sharma is pretty, pleasant and acts well; Sarah Jane Dias looks hot in her bikini act and catwalks through her part with confidence. Anupam Kher has shown us a funnier bone in the past, and Chunky is too wasted and over-the-top, even for a brainless comedy.

Director, Sachin Yardi's film will appeal to an audience who trips over 'hard-core' sex comedies. There are scenes that 'vibrate' with humour, and squeeze ample laughs (some forced), but it's mostly a bleak story-line with random scenes which are padded with pun-fulls of adult humour, sexual innuendo, and expletive one-liners. For a sex-comedy, the film is a tad long (size really matters, can't help it!) and songs like 'Dil Garden Garden Ho Gaya' slow the pace. If you were sex (comedy) starved after Kyaa Kool Hai Hum, this sequel force-feeds you a double dose. This one's for teens who get a 'boner' out of bad jokes, but it may get a rise out of some adults too. Watch at your own 'risque'.

Tip Off: Some of the humour, dialogues and gestures are X- plus; so chances are you might squirm and scream. If you have a whacked out sense of humour, and are willing to leave your brains behind, go laugh your guts out! It's all below the belt anyway.

The Dark Knight Rises- Movie Reviews

Critic's Rating:4/5
Cast: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, Michael Cain
Direction: Christopher Nolan
Genre: Action
Duration: 2 hours 44 minutes
Story: It's been eight years since Batman was last spotted on the streets of Gotham. For him, it's Mission Retirement. But now the city is under threat from terrorist Bane. An easy job, specially when the Dark Knight is keeping a close tab on all that's going on in his city?

Movie Review: Hey Gothamites! This is your last chance to hoot, whistle, clap, scream... and do everything possible to cheer for your iconic super hero who makes a final appearance in this epic conclusive part of Hollywood's greatest triology of the 21st Century. So what if that hero is turning all grey! So what if we see him falling and failing each time he tries to rise! So what if the movie really makes you wait in order to get a glimpse of Christian Bale do what he does best. For when he puts on that mask, you get your penny's worth. The end result: You end up wanting more!
Now just incase you are expecting the Joker kinda pack of fun (yes, Heath Ledger's Joker still has an edge over this one) here, remember this movie is only and only about Batman. Precisely what we want, right? Of course, there's the new recruit Selina Kyle ( Anne Hathaway) who, as bundle of spiky fun, is smart, sexy and convincing as the jewel thief dressed as Catwoman. Not to miss out isTom Hardy, the bad guy whose Bane is an evil mix of brawn, brains and digitized vocals. For the rest, it's over to Batman's holy trinity -- Gary OldmanMorgan Freeman and the ever-faithful butler Michael Caine. As for the plot, this is where all the earlier and incomplete links are joined together... till everything falls in place. But hey, remember there's Batman (Christian Bale) too! Never more vulnerable.... never before seen struggling so much -- emotionally and physically -- to make Gotham a crime-free city... never before so charged up!

Now for the action: Unlimited. The background score: Heart thumping. The special effects: Well, the magic of the Batmobile and the batty antics -- flying, and all that -- is still heart-stopping. But it is The End - all that super bang-bang stuff and the surprise! surprise! element that forces you to get back to doing all that you did when this movie began -- hoot, whistle, clap, scream... and do everything possible to cheer! So Just Go and Do (read Watch) it!

The Intouchables- Movie Reviews

Critic's Rating:
4/5
Cast: Francois Cluzet, Omar Sy, Anne Le Ny, Audrey Fleurot, Clotilde Molle
Direction: Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano
Genre: Drama
Duration: 1 hour 52 minutes
Story: The rich Philippe's life changes post a paragliding experience gone wrong. He takes to the wheel cheer for life. So what he wants next is a caretaker. Enter Driss, who not just takes good care of Philippe, but also takes his friendship with Philippe to a whole new level.

Movie Review: Now how many of us out there can make the best of the very little (literally) that we have? How many of us can laugh at our own shortcomings - both physical and emotional? Guess not many. After all, no one is born a hero; you become heroic only when you decide to be one. Celebrating this spirit of never-say-never is The Intouchables - a story of the white aristocrat, Philippe (Francois Cluzet) who hires the black Driss ( Omar Sy) only later to realise life is all about living in the moment... a true story based on the memoir named You Changed My life by Abdel Sellou.
For the record, The Intouchables became the second most successful French film of all time, breaking all box office records outside the English circuit. And it's not just the plot that helped the movie do this. It's also the perfect blend of the drama (all serious and emotional stuff bringing out the helplessness of a then-adventure-freak-now-differently-abled man) and comedy (smart dialogues coupled with funny moments... at time irreverent) that works big time. There are even some Obama-Bush-Kennedy jokes in there.

Cocktail- Movie Reviews

Critic's Rating:4/5
Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Diana Penty, Randeep Hooda
Direction: Homi Adajania
Genre: Romance
Duration: 2 hours 25 minutes
Story: Gautam likes Veronica. Veronica likes him too. Gautam falls for Meera. Now what does Meera do? Three close friends find themselves caught in a vortex of emotions.

Movie Review: Two's company; is three a crowd? Homi Adajania's romantic comedy Cocktail is a slice-of-life film mounted beautifully and imaginatively on a large canvas with the vibrant colours of London, Cape Town and New Delhi. The film addresses the proverb--two is company; is three a crowd--situation throughout. With some super-light, sweet moments that one has seen in the mid-90s American sitcom Friends; that revolved around a group of friends in Manhattan; Cocktail deals with the fun moments and then the emotional turmoil faced by three Indian friends settled in the UK, whose paths cross inadvertently.

Indian IT-BPO sector does not fear competition from Philippines: Amit Dasgupta, Ambassador to Philippines- Tech News

Indian IT-BPO sector does not fear competition from Philippines: Amit Dasgupta, Ambassador to PhilippinesCHENNAI: Ambassador designate toPhilippines Amit Dasgupta said on Tuesday theIndian IT-BPO sector does not fear competition from the South East Asian country as the Indian industry has huge possibilities.

"I do not think there is any fear. In fact, Indian IT industry per se needs to be seen differently," Dasgupta, who will take over as Ambassador to Philippines on July 22, said.

Interacting with industrialists and industry representatives at the "Business opportunities in Southern Australia and Philippines" meet, organised by CII, he said, "Indian IT (is not confined to BPO and call centre operations) is very much more."

"The Indian IT industry has huge possibilities (today). It has gone to e-governance and now there are many developments in the Cloud computing space. You can do business with the Indian IT industry as the way you look at it. You should make Indian IT more visible (in this regard)", he said.

Dasgupta observed that India can focus on tapping the pharma, bamboo and furniture industry and said a business delegation led by a Cabinet minister would visit Philippines in the next two months to strengthen trade relations.

"A Cabinet Minister and a delegation from India will visit Manila. I think they will be visiting in August or September", he said but declined to reveal the name of the minister.

CII Southern Region Sub-Committee Chairman J N Amrolia said exports to Philippines was $882.74 million in 2010-11 while imports were $429.39 million. There is potential to increase trade in drugs and pharma sector as competitive cost of the Indian healthcare industry gives it an edge, he said.

On his association with Australia, as its Consul General of India in Sydney, he said despite alleged racial issue on Indian students in 2009, two way trade had gone up to $21 billion in 2011.

He said South Australia has immense potential on new and renewable energies and added that a senior government official from that province would visit India later this year. Besides, a delegation from NewSouthWales would also visit India later this year, he said.

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night- Movie Reviews

Critic's Rating:3/5
Cast: Brandon Routh, Anita Briem, Sam Huntington, Taye Diggs
Direction: Kevin Munroe
Genre: Thriller
Duration: 1 hour 47 minutes
Story: Detective Dylan Dog is happy snooping on cheating husbands. Of course, there's a famous past he lays claim to. What? Dylan excelled in paranormal cases. He was the link between the real and the living dead. Little does he know it's now time to get back to what he does best -- fighting the bloody creatures....

Movie Review: If fear factor is what you're looking for (since the filmmakers classify this as horror), there are the typical elements to choose from - blood dripping from the ceiling, someone appearing from nowhere on the other side of the window pane, scary masks of sharp-toothed monsters. We, however, are a little brave... so we don't really get all that scared. If laughter is what you're looking for (since the filmmakers classify this as comedy too), there are a couple of moments... and one-liners in there. Again, there is nothing that seems enough to really, really tickle our funny bones.

So does that mean Dylan Dog: The Dead of Night is just not watchable? It is watchable, for the movie is based on Tiziano Sclavi's Italian comic book series by the same name. So thrill, action, speed, chase, mystery and supernatural are there in aplenty.
Of course, the one standing out in this bloody war on the streets is Brandon Routh. As detective Dylan Dog, dressed in the signature red shirt, he is convincing, cool, calm and suave. Watch him in the final sequence where he guns down the werewolves Bond style. Next is Sam Huntington's Marcus who gives us the much-needed relief in this hit-and-run werewolf versus human battle. It's only when he turns into the living dead... feasting on zombie buffet and getting a job done at the body shop does the fun begin.

Till then, it's over to werewolves, vampires and zombies who are struggling to be the master in this (somewhat cliche) war of the good monsters versus the bad ones.
