Son Of Sardaar- Movie Reviews

Critic's Rating:
3/5

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt, Juhi Chawla
Direction: Ashwni Dhir
Genre: Comedy
Duration: 2 hours 20 minutes
Story: A strapping sardaar travels home (Punjab) from UK, to claim ancestral property; only to be welcomed by another family of sardaars who're age-old clan-dushmans. And the only escape is living-in with the enemy.

Review: Move over Chicken Khurana, the real butter kukkad is here. And he's here with a bang this Diwali - singing, dancing, flipping in the air - all in the mustard fields of Phagwara (that's in Punjab, FYI), classic Bollywoodishtyle. Except that this is a Singham getting Dabangg and Rowdier than anyRathore - on Punjabi steroids - and in total sardaar avatar. Hadippa!

So bring out that tall glass of chilled lassi and let's figure the why, what, who of this desi-ghee story. Jassi (Ajay Devgn) jaisa koi nahi. He falls in love-at-first-sight, in a train with Sukhmeet (Sonakshi), call her Sukh please (she's quite a 'peace' of work); and ends up as a guest in her mad-house full of comical sardaars - The Sandhus. There's the head-of-the-house Billu paaji(Sanjay Dutt), bros Tony (Mukul Dev) and Tito (Vindoo Dara Singh), who've sworn to never have ice-cream and cold-drinks (rum-on-the-rocks is all he's ever had, poor liver, sigh!) until they avenge their father's death; and a kidsardaar who talks about 'pegs' (Patiala types).

Adding solid femme power to this macho sardaar story is Pammi (Juhi Chawla, delightful) Billu's mooh-boli-biwi, Bebe (Tanuja) suffering from part-time memory lapses; and lastly Rajpreet the loved buffalo (who mooedthis cheez?) The problem? The Sandhus have been vengefully thirsting for Jassi's head, but can't lay a sword on him because he's their (unwanted) house-guest (mehmaan equals bhagwan, remember?), he even feigns 'paira-te-laces' (paralyses) to stay 'home' to save his life.

Ajay Devgn convincingly plays son-of-the-soil with power, playfulness and colorful pagdis in every scene. He switches from comedy, action and romance flippantly, impressing with funny lines, gimmicks atop a ghodi (Jassi again) and tons of PJJs (poor-Punju-jokes). Sonakshi throws in another 'heavy-weight' performance. In Ajay's own words, "kaafi bhaari hai" (read: weight). She does her usual dance routine (with ceetees et al), spouts 'chal jhoota' to all men, and plays the moophat girl in true sardarni style.

Sanjay Dutt, as the supporting sardaar, is a delight to watch. His gussa makes you giggle and his angry outbursts are adorable. Juhi Chawla lights up the screen with her comic timing as impeccable as ever. The coy-cum-cutesy scenes between Dutt and Chawla are amongst the highlights of this one.

The other members of this madhouse, Vindoo Dara Singh and Mukul Dev also pack a knockout Punjabi-punch with their dumb'n'dumber act.

Ashwni Dhir entertains in parts, with a plenty of Punju humour and goofy one-liners that crack you up. While handling all the Jaswinders, Parminders, Happys and Sweetys, he loses the plot, stretching it all around the sarson-ka-khet (and leaving some behind). This is a mass-entertainer, strung together with a series of Santa-Banta jokes, spiked solidly with macho sardaarisms.

Like Jassi says, "Kabhi toh hasliya karo", this one makes you laugh - in parts!

Jab Tak Hai Jaan- Movie Reviews

Critic's Rating:
4/5

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma
Direction: Yash Chopra
Genre: Romance
Duration: 3 hours
Story: Through a personal diary account a carefree media professional discovers that a Indian Army man who fascinates her has a love interest tucked away in London. Will she be able to bridge the gap and get close to him? Or will his past come back to haunt?

Review: Jab Tak Hai Jaan is the swan song of Yash Chopra, the big daddy of romance. Every frame is picture perfect, the emotions are well nuanced. But there is one inherent flaw--the story by Aditya Chopra is hackneyed.

Shah Rukh Khan is Samar Anand a bomb disposal expert from the Indian army posted in Ladakh. He's a brave heart(of the kind you've seen in Hollywood movies like Livewire, Hurt Locker) who has defused close to a hundred bombs without bothering to ever wear a safety suit. His colleagues laud him and refer to him as the man who cannot die.

Samar goes about defusing bombs with such ease; even your fear of the bomb is temporarily suspended, at least through the duration of this film. On the personal front, Samar is a brooder and sleeps with his personal diary strapped close to his chest. Anushkha Sharma (Akira Rai), a documentary filmmaker, who is also in Ladakh, accidentally finds herself in possession of Samar's diary. Since no one has ever told her that it is bad manners to read another person's diary, she leafs through its contents.

And discovers that the army man doesn't smile because of his poignant past. The story unfolds to tell you that in his growing up years Samar, who did odd jobs in London, to make ends meet was footloose till he fell head-over-heels-love-with a rich heiress Katrina Kaif (Meera Thappar). Meera is engaged to be married to a gora but she finds herself inexplicably drawn to the desi Samar; the man who teaches her how to shed her inhibitions and live life king-size.

A road-accident in London changes the course of Meera-Samar's happy love story and Samar finds himself back in Ladakh diffusing bombs. In this strife ridden atmosphere, his path crosses that of Akira; a young girl, who falls for him. Before Samar and Akira's acquaintance turns into anything deeper, the film plot lands Samar back in London, where he meets with a road accident yet again. This time, the hospital authorities, diagnose him with retrograde amnesia... and say he has been in a time warp of sorts for close to a decade. The only one, who can bring him back from the brink, is his first love Meera. And a new chapter unfolds.

Shah Rukh Khan is the backbone of JTHJ. He's charismatic as the lover and enigmatic as the army guy. Katrina Kaif is a smart dresser and looks stunning. She's also a delight to watch in the song Ishq Shava, she having become this dramatic Bollywood film dancer. But when it comes to handling the intense emotional scenes, Kat is still a Barbie doll, beautiful but plastic.

Anushka Sharma is easy on the eye and an ideal fit in the motor-mouth parts. She has the perfect 10 figure but frankly she is saddled with an unsatisfying role.

A R Rahman's music--be it the Challa track or the Heer song never grew on the charts; but in the film, the music charms you because the lead actors infuse life into the songs.

Frankly if someone were to ask what's the bonus you take back from JTHJ. It's the end-credit visuals of Yash Chopra horsing around with his actors or immersed in deep discussion with his crew. These bring a lump to your throat because the film comes so close to his death.

Tip-Off: You will not like Jab Tak Hai Jaan if mushy romances are not your staple. The movie doesn't have the intensity of some of Yash Chopra's earlier romances like Daag, Kabhie-Kabhie, Silsila and Chandni. But it still has the stamp of the man who made some of the best romantic fare in Bollywood.

Google adds new features to Gmail- Tech News

Google adds new features to GmailGoogle, the search giant, has introduced new search features in Gmail, its cloud-based email service. In a post on the official Gmail blog, software engineer Christian Kurmann said that users can search their emails while taking into account file size and exact date.

"We're always looking for ways to make it faster and easier for you to find your messages using search in Gmail. So starting today, you can now search emails by size, more flexible date options, exact match and more. This means, for example, to find emails larger than 5MB, you can search for size:5m or larger:5m or to find emails sent over a year ago, older_than:1y," according to the blog

Kurmann's post further continued that these new additions will work in conjunction with other Gmail features intro by Google recently, including new compose box and autocomplete in search.

A few months ago, the company had also started field trials wherein users logged into their Gmail accounts could search for emails and files from Google Search itself. Currently being tested only on desktop searches, these trials require users to sign up by themselves.

Wreck-It Ralph- Movie Reviews

Critic's Rating:
4/5

Cast: John C Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jane Lynch, Jack McBrayer
Direction: Rich Moore
Genre: Animation
Duration: 1 hour 48 minutes
Story: Ralph has been the bad guy in an arcade video game for 30 years too long. Tired of being unloved and unappreciated, despite doing his 'job', he decides to leave and become a hero anyway. Does he succeed in his quest?

Review: Before one gets down to the actual film, you know you're going to be treated to an animation short. 'Paperman', a black-and-white ode to love-at-first-sight precedes the main feature and must not be missed.

'Wreck-It Ralph' itself takes you back to an era before gaming consoles were handheld or wireless. For the most part, one had to go to an arcade to play one's favourite games.

This film takes you behind-the-scenes, as it were, taking a closer look at the characters that peopled those games, right from the eight-bit pixellated beings to the ones that are cutting-edge high-definition wonders.

Ralph (Reilly) is tired of being the bad guy in a game where everybody takes him for granted and only celebrates the hero Felix (McBrayer), who fixes everything Ralph wrecks with the help of a magic hammer.

Ralph game-hops to a 'Starship Trooper'-like game called Hero's Duty and eventually lands up in another one called Sugar Rush. His object of attention is a medal he 'wins' in the former game and sort of - loses - in the latter.

While in Sugar Rush, he meets the feisty and high-strung Vanellope (Silverman), who's branded a glitch but wants nothing more than to win a race and gain her people's respect.

The film is remarkable in that it takes you on a multi-generational gaming trip, sparking off an aching nostalgia for all things retro while keeping true to its real story - a hero's dilemma - having to choose between doing the so-called right thing and keeping true to your friends.

10 things to know while buying TVs this festive season- Tech News

10 things to know while buying TVs this festive seasonNEw DELHI: The festive season is here and many people are looking to make a big purchase during this auspicious time. Are you considering a new television for your home, but are unsure of the things to look for while selecting your grand TV? Don't be misguided by the advertisers and the smooth-talk of retailers while making the purchase that you may plan to keep for a long time.

Save a few bucks and make the best choice by going through the list of 10 things you must know before buying that TV.

Display type - OLED vs LED vs LCD vs Plasma
This is one of the biggest dilemma for all buyers, whether they should stick to the ageing Plasma TVs, go for the currently popular LED and LCD televisions or invest in OLED TVs, the technology of the future.

For starters, Plasma TVs will save you a lot of money but don't think about the initial cost only, since this type of television draws much more power than any of its competitors. Moreover, since it is an outgoing display technology, manufacturers will stop customer support in a few years, leaving you stranded if you need a component replaced. Nevertheless, Plasma TVs offer superior contrast and dark blacks, along with excellent viewing angles.

LCD TVs use CCLFs (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps) and are the next in line in terms of power consumption; however, these score poorly when it comes to viewing angles. Though cheaper than LED televisions, they cost a bit more than generation-old Plasma TVs and can be quite expensive when it comes to large screen sizes.

LED TVs, the most popular today, are basically LCD televisions with LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) instead of CCFLs. Currently the best in the crop of displays in terms of power consumption, these offer better blacks than LCD televisions and are comparatively thinner as well. This type of TV also responds well to colour variations and acute viewing angles, giving the best user experience.

OLED is the display technology of the future, with the thinnest screen, amazing colour rendition, lower power consumption and better viewing angles than existing display types. However, TVs with OLED displays are extremely costly and suffer from poor lifespan.

Panel type - VA vs IPS
LED and LCD and televisions available today come with either IPS or VA panels. Since both types of TVs have LCD displays (LED televisions are LCD televisions with LED bulbs instead of CCFLs), both have liquid crystals. The different between IPS and VA panels lies between the alignment of the liquid crystals -- horizontal in IPS and vertical in VA panel.

The advantage that IPS has over VA is that there is no distortion or damage to the screen even if it is hit quite hard. Apart from that, it also offers great viewing angles and maintains consistency of colours. Therefore, if you are worried about your kids damaging the brand new television, then go for IPS panels, otherwise VA panels will be suitable. LG and Philips use IPS panels, while others like Sony and Samsung have VA displays.

Pixelation is the same with both the panels and you should be seated at least eight to 10 feet away from the TV for best picture quality.

Brightness
Brighter display does not always make a better TV. If you go for a TV that offers high brightness, the dark colours - like grey and black - will appear dull. Brightness level in LED TVs is the best since the blacks appear dark as well, while Plasma and LCD televisions follow it from afar.

Power consumption
LED TVs are the best choice if you are concerned about the amount of power consumed by your new television. This is because of the LED bulbs used in the display, which consume 20-30% less power than CCFL's of LCD TVs. Last in the race come Plasma televisions, which will add a hefty amount to your power bill as compared to LCD as well as LED TVs.

Refresh rates
Refresh rate in a television refers to the speed at which the display changes images. Ever encountered the problem of motion blur on the TV? This is because of poor refresh rate. Higher refresh rate in a television translates to a clearer picture quality and reduce this motion blur or ghosting. Moreover, when it comes to gaming, the refresh rates matter a lot.

If you want to connect your Xbox, Play Station or Wii to your TV, then Plasma televisions are the best option, since the refresh rate can reach up to 600Hz. On the other hand, LCD TVs deliver the worst results when the subject is of refresh rates and motion blur is a common complaint. A LED television can be a decent choice since it can handle high refresh rates in videos and games and render a quality image.

Internet, voice control and apps
Internet connectivity in a TV is among the new advancements introduced in TVs, making them the much touted SmartTVs. But do you really plan to use internet on a big screen television? If you want to watch YouTube videos, chat with friends, check mails, play games and access Facebook on a TV, then you only have a handful options in the market. You can also look forward to features like gesture control, voice control and access to apps with these televisions.

Just so you know, accessing all forms of online content on the television would require you to attach a keyboard and mouse to it via USB port. And be ready to pay a steep price for a set of features that you could probably access on your phone as well.

If you decide against buying an internet-enabled TV, you can just link an Android set-top-box like Evo TV to your new non-internet television and enjoy all Android apps and seamless access World Wide Web on your TV.

And before you go for an internet-enabled TV, take into account the bandwidth you would consume with this new device at your disposal. You should consider the data transfer limit that your plan has and the speed of your net connection before opting for an internet TV.
3D viewing
3D viewing in a television is yet another feature that has caught the imagination of the masses. But the content producers, ie the companies which make 3D movies, videos etc, are still playing catch-up. There is a huge dearth of 3D content in the market and no TV can convert a 2D video into 3D. So, before going for a 3D television, be prepared to be disappointed since you will not be using that feature too much.

If you wear spectacles and are thinking of investing in a 3D television, keep in mind that you would have to use contact lenses in order to view the 3D images comfortably. You only alternative in India would be the 55-inch Toshiba 3D that renders three-dimensional images and videos without any glasses. However, this technological marvel costs a hefty Rs 12 lakh and may not be within everyone's budget.

1920: The Evil Returns- Movie Reviews

Critic's Rating:3/5
Cast: Aftab Shivdasani, Tia Bajpai, Vidya Malvade
Direction: Bhushan Patel
Genre: Horror
Duration: 2 hours 4 minutes
Story: A poet falls in love with a fan he has never seen. They eventually meet, but she is haunted by a demon. Will the two be able to live happily ever after?

Movie Review: Jaidev Varma (Aftab Shivdasani) is a poet who looks for a reason to live. He finds his inspiration in his fan Smriti ( Tia Bajpai). The two exchange letters and fall in love even without meeting each other. Destiny brings them together, but not the way they'd dreamt. Smriti is haunted by a demon.

1920: Evil Returns has enough and more in store to scare you. It's the perfect Halloween film you could watch if horror's your favourite genre.

Huge haunted mansions, creepy graveyards, unknown screams, shocking, sudden and mysterious appearances of characters, lonely roads, cold scary nights, dangerous forests, candles, violin and a country setting...1920has every ingredient that makes for a good horror film. Special mention should go to the background score and stunning cinematography, which makes the film even more effective.

The first half has a superb build-up. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. The latter half is a tad cliched and a lot like 1920 (2008), which is a bit disappointing. Girl talking in a man's voice, girl floating in the air mysteriously... everything post the demonic possession looks caricaturish, but the film keeps you engaged nevertheless.

Tia Bajpai acts very well and so does an understated Aftab Shivdasani. He delivers a mature performance. Vidya Malvade has no great role, but she is good at what has been given to her.

Skyfall- Movie Reviews

Critic's Rating:
4/5

Cast: Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Ben Whishaw
Direction: Sam Mendes
Genre: Action
Duration: 2 hours 22 minutes
Story: Espionage becomes leaner, meaner and shadowy. Can James Bondstill make the earth move — or the sky fall?

Movie Review: The first thing Bond (Craig) blows to bits in Skyfall is all those cracks about mid-life crises. Despite flunking his fitness test, Bond reveals how he's fab at 50, making his vintage his most powerful weapon. As espionage changes from competing nations to individuals spreading violence for money and thrills, Bond grapples with 'Silva' Rodriguez (Bardem), former MI6 agent determined to destroy department head M (Dench) for having left him to Chinese mercy after he overstepped his brief. As Bond and Silva race with whistle- out-loud (WOL) action towards an edgy M, those watching Skyfall have a ball.

Right away, Skyfall is a love-bite to London, celebrating all that's Brit and Bond-branded - clever since it leaves those younger Yankee spies looking a little plain. Realising history's cash-worth, Skyfall plugs everything beautiful about the British — Tubes, tunnels and Tennyson, damp, rainy skies, humour sharp like a Savile Row suit, china bulldogs, even manual shaving kits — smoothly blended with explosive American pace. Plus Iberian charm, expressed oh-so-silkily by a beaming Bardem, perfect as the campy Silva, unbuttoning Bond's shirt to go lovingly where no man has been before. Although Bond does rasp at him, "What makes you think this is my first time?" Well, well, Commander.

Clever little moments like that keep exploding, Bond telling the young new Q (wonderful Whishaw) handing him tiny new-age gadgetry, "You've still got spots", to be wryly told, "Were you expecting an exploding pen? We don't really go for that anymore." Bond must constantly mind the age-gap, dealing with younger spies and with terror changing enough to hit London while going online. To tackle this and save M from strangely Oedipal Silva, Bond rides the underside of a lift up a skyscraper, swims through a river of ice, blows his country home to bits, beds two beautiful babes - even weeps.

Skyfall is possibly the most emotional Bond movie yet, James re-visiting his childhood home, M facing her exit. But alongside its sentimentality, it has standard Bond fun - Oriental heavies, hissing Iguanas, casinos, cocktails, backless gowns, melting kisses in warm showers, sadism, saxophones and sparkling repartee. Sure, it sags slightly, gets teary-eyed and despite a hot Miss Moneypenny (Harris), its sexiness feels a tad restrained. But catch Skyfall anyhow. It's still special enough for your eyes only.

Yuvraj is the best judge of his fitness: Dhoni- Sports

Yuvraj is the best judge of his fitness: DhoniNEW DELHI: Yuvraj Singh's brilliant form in domestic matches has made him a serious contender for a slot in the Test team but Indian captain MS Dhoni is still not sure whether the talented left-hander is ready to face the vigours of five-day cricket.

"It is very difficult for me to comment on his fitness sitting over here. We have to understand that five-day format has its own uncertainties unlike ODIs or T20s. In ODIs, you know that you have to field for 50 overs only, while in Test cricket there may be a situation that a team might bat for one-and-a-half to two days.

"We have to assess whether Yuvraj is ready to field for two days," Dhoni replied to a query on whether Yuvraj is fit enough to be selected for the Test series against England.

"Having said that it is Yuvraj who is the best judge about how he is feeling. He has played quite a few domestic games now and it is up to him to reflect on his game," the Indian skipper told the media persons during a promotional event on Wednesday.

Dhoni also spoke on the same lines as his colleagues Harbhajan Singh and Virat Kohli, with his vote going in favour of the turning tracks.

"I still believe that the groundsmen know what really is good for us. Sporting track always doesn't mean that it will only have grass on it. In the sub-continent it has always been turning tracks, which is for the spinners.

"I haven't seen an off break bowler for a long time who is able to hit the rib cage of a batsman with a delivery that has turn and bounce. It's really painful but you enjoy the challenge," said Dhoni.

England Test series is being sought as a revenge series but Dhoni didn't want to predict the outcome.

"I don't believe in predicting results. I know that we need to train hard and also look into specific areas."

Asked about the new look Indian team, which wouldn't have the likes of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman against quality opposition, Dhoni quipped, "It might look new on paper but this side will reflect the confidence in all three formats in the days to come."
