Horror chills in 3D

Story: A young broker (Mahaakshay) has the arduous job of selling off a haunted house in the hills. But before he can do that, he chooses to exorcise the house of its shrieking ghosts. More interestingly, it means travelling back in time to re-align an unsavoury incident that occurred 80 years ago. Can the broker seal his deal?

Movie Review: Vikram Bhatt's fascination for horror continues, even as the Indian film industry -- and the desi viewer -- desperately awaits the first authentic bone-chiller from Bollywood. Is Haunted the answer to the chill hunters' prayers?

Not completely. And that's because the story is dog-eared and done-to-death. Almost every horror film has the wailing ghost of a nubile young maiden who sends outs desperate SOSs to anyone who dares to enter her domain. And don't we know why she's wailing! Still, we won't reveal the secret, which in any case, is hardly a secret....

But if the film works -- and it works quite well -- is only because of the special effects of the film. Experiencing the horror in 3D is indeed a novel experience for the viewer, specially since it is smartly done. Each time the ghosts lunge out at you, stick out their tongue or flail their limbs, you jump back in your seat. And yes, there are a lot of ghosts, performing a lot of ghastly acrobatics. There's even a snake sticking out its venom at you and a hurtling brick, almost missing your nose....Great fun.

Other than that, there is the scenic beauty (Pravin Bhatt's cinematography), a hummable music score (Chirantan Bhatt) and the eye for detail (the film moves back and forth in time) which keeps the hours ticking. Performance-wise, the director has opted for a bunch of new actors to pitch in as the lead pair. Sadly, there's nothing extraordinary about them and they hardly leave an impact. It's the veterans, like Achint Kaur and Arif Zakaria who end up giving you the goosebumps. And they do it in adequate measure.

Tepid teen romance

Story : Rhea (Shraddha Kapoor) wants to celebrate her 18th birthday in a very special way. Seems her dream might just come true when her rich boyfriend, Luv Nanda (Taaha Shah) promises her a night she'll never forget. Indeed, the night does turn out to be unforgettable, but not the way Rhea imagined. Revenge, not love becomes the leitmotif of the eventful evening, as the 18-year-old tries to avenge her humiliation and teach her cad boy-friend a few kick-ass lessons he'll never forget.

Movie Review : This one is romance in reverse. And that's the only novelty the film can boast about. While most Bollywood love stories reach a fruition, Love Ka The End works feverishly -- and foolishly -- towards love's decimation.

It was an original idea which could have taken a fresh look at the spunky new generation that is thronging the big cities and small towns of progressing India. It's a sassy, smart, aggressive generation that won't take shit from anyone, come what may. Love obviously isn't about sweet sacrifices anymore. If things go wrong, the plan of action is swift revenge. And why not....

Great idea, poor execution: that's the irony of this film which promises to catapult Yash Raj productions as the MTV of the film industry. But hey, the nasty and brutish babalog of the sundry MTV reality shows still do bear some semblance to real GenXer's, despite their exaggerated brattish ways. Here, the bunch of college kids lack both IQ and EQ and hardly seem credible. Okay, so there are a bunch of richie rich playboys out there, waiting to prey upon innocent Red Riding Hoods for the sake of their prestige and peer pressure. Scumbag billionaire boy, Luv Nanda may treat love-struck Rhea's virginity as a commodity to bet upon. So far, so good. But when it comes to Rhea's revenge plan, the film gets so ditzy, you don't know if it's actually happening. Come on guys, our young adults are much smarter than pouring itching powder in underpants and all that under-the-belt stuff....Add to that the ridiculous climax and the much touted `mutton song' and you end up desperately sending an SOS to Yash Chopra.

Daag, Deewar, Kabhi Kabhie, Trishul, Silsila, Chandni, Darr, Dil To Paagal Hai, Veer Zaara, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge....Love Ka The End (these are some of the films produced by Yash Raj Films): Come back, Yashji!

The film scores only in some of its performances (Shraddha Kapoor's gang) and might appeal to young collegiates who want to miss a few boring tutorials.

Facebook, Google eye Skype deal

Facebook and Google are separately considering a tie-up with Skype after the web video conferencing service delayed its initial public offering , two sources with direct knowledge of the discussions told Reuters.

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has taken part in internal discussions about buying Skype, according to one of the sources. Another source said Facebook had reached out to the Luxembourg-based company about forming a joint venture . Google has also held early talks for a joint venture with Skype, the second source said. A Skype deal could be valued at $3 billion to $4 billion, the first source said. Skype's IPO is expected to raise about $1 billion, several other sources said.

The discussions are in early stages, and it is not clear which option the companies favour, the first two sources said. Although an IPO is still in the cards for the second half of 2011, Skype remains in discussions with other companies , two of the sources said. If it goes through, a Skype IPO would be one of the most hotly anticipated debuts by a US technology company this year.

Securing Skype as a partner would expand Facebook's user base, help it grow in international markets where Skype is popular, and give its halfbillion users another reason to remain active and connected to its online community . Analysts say a tie-up between Facebook and Skype would make more sense than one with Google, which already has a similar service-—Google Voice.

Skype and Google declined to comment. Facebook was not immediately available to comment. The information is not public and the sources declined to be named. With a partnership , Facebook can tack another service onto its everexpanding menu—a crucial feature given that many mobile devices, including tablets , now come equipped with front-facing cameras.

"This is very synergistic ," said Trip Chowdhry, an analyst with Global Equities Research. "It puts Facebook two steps ahead of Google because of the number of Skype users."

"In your social network, you will now have another very compelling service—Skype ," he added. Last year, Skype had about 124 million connected users every month by the end of June. But 8.1 million were paying customers, using Skype to make calls to traditional phones at discounted rates. Analysts have said that while Skype's growth has been impressive, investors would be cautious about its prospects for revenue growth due to the size of its base of nonpaying customers. The company was founded in 2003. eBay Inc bought it in 2005 for $3.1 billion. In 2009, eBay sold a majority stake in Skype to an investor group that included Silver Lake, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Andreessen Horowitz for $1.9 billion in cash and a $125 million note. EBay retained about a third of the company.

Last August, Skype filed a registration statement to go public. The October appointment of a new chief executive , Tony Bates, a former senior vice president of Cisco Systems, put the eagerly anticipated initial public offer on hold until the second half of 2011.

Account of the man who live tweeted Osama's death hacked

NEW DELHI: Security experts warning to Netizens that online scammers may seek to exploit the death of Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden to spread malware has come true.

According to security firm Websense, the website of Sohaib Athar (@ReallyVirtual), the man who unknowingly gave live ring-side view of the bin Laden's death on microblogging site Twitter, has been hacked.

Websense has discovered that the website belonging to Athar has been compromised by hackers and leads to the Blackhole exploit kit. This means Web surfers who visited Athar's blog, Reallyvirtual.com, early on Monday may have malware silently installed on their computers.

According Websense, "Anyone going to this page would also load content from the malicious URL ..., and the Blackhole Exploit Kit would then try to use several exploits to automatically install malware on the PC."

The malware that the drive-by-download attempts to install is a fake system tool named 'WindowsRecovery' that claims to have found problems on the victim's computer. To convince the user that something really is wrong with the system, the malware hides all files and folders in the hard drives and on the desktop says Websense in its blogpost.

And, not surprisingly, scammers offer the user a quick solution to this problems with a purchase of the premium version of 'WindowsRecovery', adds the blog post.

Apple has updated the line-up of its all-in-one iMac computers with new models getting quad-core Intel Sandy Bridge processors, AMD Radeon HD graphics and Thunderbolt technology. That means there s a hardware bump and also inclusion of the Thunderbolt data port, also used in the 2011 MacBook Pro models. Ganguly back in IPL, signs up with Pune Warriors

New Delhi: After going unsold in the players' auction, former India captain Sourav Ganguly today made a dramatic return to the Indian Premier League by signing up for struggling franchise Pune Warriors as replacement for injured pacer Ashish Nehra.

"We were waiting for Ashish Nehra's fitness report and ultimately the report came yesterday. I was already in talks with Ganguly and we decided that the amount of experience that Sourav has in cricket will no doubt help the team. So we finalised Ganguly last night," Pune Warriors Team Director Abhijit Sarkar said referring to the finger injury that Nehra has been nursing.

Ganguly, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders for three IPL seasons captaining them in two editions, went unsold in the January players' auction despite a rather modest base price of USD 400,000.

The 38-year-old refused a mentor's role with KKR after that and there had been speculation of a possible comeback through another franchise.

The left-handed batman was first sought by Kochi Tuskers Kerala but their application was rejected by the IPL's Governing Council.

6 Tips to boost your Browsing Skills

You probably spend a good amount of your computing time within the confines of a web browser. But are you making the most of that time?

You're not if you are relying on the same old browser habits that you developed years ago. The good news: There are plenty of ways in which you can supercharge your web browsing without resorting to a bunch of tricks that you'll likely forget.

Discover caret browsing: One of the best-kept secrets of both Internet Explorer (IE) and Firefox is the caret browsing feature. Caret browsing essentially makes web pages more keyboard friendly - and web surfing a lot more productive, particularly if you spend much time at all selecting and copying text or graphics from a website.

With caret browsing activated, a text cursor appears within any web page, and moving the cursor around and highlighting text and graphics are very similar to performing the same actions in a word processing document.

In caret mode, the Tab key moves you from one major section of a web page to another, and the Enter key will activate any link on which the cursor is positioned.

You can activate (and de-activate) caret browsing by simply pressing the F7 key in both IE and Firefox. Google's Chrome has a version of caret browsing that involves first selecting some text and then using the Shift and arrow keys to select more.
Launch into Full Screen: Most elements of web browsers - menus, toolbars, status bars, and the like - are useless clutter once you've landed on a page that you want to read. To get rid of the clutter, simply tap the F11 key. All of the major browsers will launch into 'full screen' mode, showing you just your web page and none of the browser controls you don't need.

Press F11 again to return to the browser's previous state.

With Internet Explorer, you can still access your menus with in full screen mode. Just use the keyboard shortcuts (Alt-F, Alt-E, and so on), and the menus will hover over the web page.
Outsmart Ads: One of the biggest time-zappers while surfing the internet today is waiting for ads to load - or waiting for them to leave you alone so that you can get to the content you need.

You can get rid of most ads altogether in a couple of ways. First, if you're a Firefox user, head straight for Adblock Plus (http://bit.ly/12oUg). Install this plugin, and in no time bothersome ads will be a distant memory.

This plugin can't zap all ads, but it takes care of most of them. Chrome users also now have a beta version of Adblock plus (http://bit.ly/7EABcN) that they can try.

If you're using IE, try Ad Muncher (http://bit.ly/3aCI27), which is also compatible with most other browsers.
Use the Keyboard: Think about the operations you perform repeatedly in your browser using the mouse. There are probably keyboard shortcuts for most of them that can save you a lot of time.

Do you frequently return to your home page, for example? Hold down the Alt key and tap Home (Alt-Home) Need to find something on a web page? Ctrl-F activates the Find box. Need a new tab? Ctrl-T takes care of it. And how about switching among open tabs? Ctrl-Tab does the trick. These tricks work in all of the major browsers.
Try a form Filler: Web forms are everywhere these days, and most of them ask for the same information: your name, address, e-mail address, and perhaps your credit card if you're purchasing something.

Make short work of entering all of that information by enlisting the help of a form filler. The two best ones are LastPass (http://lastpass.com) and RoboForm (http://www.roboform.com).
Adopt Multiple Browsers: You might love IE. You may swear by Firefox. You may be intrigued by Chrome. Regardless of which browser you prefer, one of the other browsers likely has a feature (or a add-on) that will let you get your work done faster.

There's no reason these days not to be acquainted with all of the major web browsers. That would be IE, Firefox, and Chrome. They're all free. They all get along with one another when installed on the same computer.

And thanks to a diverse and talented development community, they all have add-ins or plugins that provide unique features that are not available on other browsers. Soppy humour

Story: Govinda is a forty-year-old virgin who is hell-bent on losing his virginity, even if it means opting for an arranged marriage with the somewhat deranged Yuvika Chaudhary.

Movie Review: This much can be said about Govinda. Give him a chance to tickle your funny bone, and he'll try hard, very hard, to make you laugh. So much so, that you actually do end up smiling intermittently, despite the non-happening plot of the film. And that's only because Govinda still retains his unparalleled sense of comic timing and his spontaneity. His goofy attempts to have sex get quirky now and then, specially when there his Sanjay Mishra, another attention-grabbing comic artist, to dampen his efforts.

But how long can you suffer the silliness that masquerades neath the garb of this adult comedy? Or is it a juvenile comedy?

Google Applications to Get Paid in India

Amidst a lot of changes seen around in internet community, it has now been revealed that Google applications for the use of business purposes are soon going to get paid. This shall start on the 10th of May, 2010, in India.

This shall affect those businesses which have more than 10 users in the country. The web-based tools that are available for the aid of the people are soon going to cost money. There are many options available on the Google services such as document editing, calendar management, Google Calendar, email and so on.

There are more than three million people which avail this every single day. For this reason, they have decided to be able to earn a little profit out of it. The business users of Google shall now be asked to pay for more than 10 email-accounts they have on Google.

The website has not yet announced the change, but an e-mail message sent by the Google Apps Team reads: “We recently announced upcoming changes to the maximum number of users for Google Apps. As of May 10, any organization that signs up for a new account will be required to use the paid Google Apps for Business product in order to create more than 10 users”.

Is Google TV a failure?

Seems Google's TV venture is paying little dividends. World's top computer mouse maker Logitech's recent rough fourth also mirrored Google TV's dismal sales. Logitech's Revue Google TV set-top box and periphery devices, such as Revue-optimized webcam, managed to generate a measly $5 million in sales in the last quarter.

The number is far below expectations. For, in the previous quarter, Logitech reported Google TV product sales of $22 million, and forecasted to sell another $18 million in the just-announced quarter. The company missed the estimates by more than 70 percent. The plunging Google TV sales are also reflected by a 28 percent rise in inventory as reportedly revealed by Logitech.

Logitech has been a partner of the search giant since it unveiled Google TV in May 2010. The Revue set-top box went on sale in October 2010.

Despite the poor sales, Logitech remains optimist on Google TV. It's CEO Gerald P Quindlen reportedly told investors that he remains "enthusiastic about Google TV." The company also said that it plans to scale back marketing for the Revue set-top box.

According to some, Google has still not delivered on the software that promises to make Google TV interesting, which is its Android SDK for Google TV. The SDK is expected to be launched at the company's forthcoming developer conference in May. However, many believe that it should have accompanied Google TV's launch in October 2010.

Logitech, which also makes speakers, webcams and keyboards, issued a profit warning last month, citing weakness in its retail division in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Quindlen said that he expects sales to rise about 10 percent to $2.6 billion for the year ending in March 2012, less than some analysts were expecting.

The company, based in Switzerland and Fremont, California, called the fourth quarter that ended on March 31 a "disappointing conclusion" to 2010.

Logitech is shifting away from its traditional mouse and keyboard business for PCs to equipment for tablets.

How Bad Is Caffeine?

It has come to my attention lately that I drink a fair amount of coffee, which contains a fair amount of caffeine. I realised this after being told that 8 cups of coffee per day is bad news. It was brought to my attention by a member of staff in the sales team, but he couldn’t tell me why caffeine was such ‘bad news’.

This got me wondering – how bad is caffeine really? Should a coffee lover such as myself be worried?
After doing a little bit of research into it, I found an array of rather scary sounding side effects. It didn’t take me long to realise that most of the ‘side effects’ listed on various ‘health’ websites were there to simply scare me into buying their products and subscriptions, so I spent a bit more time looking into it, using trusted medical websites.

After a few hours research, and a few hundred cups of coffee to power me on, I managed to create a condensed list of caffeine/coffee side effects to show the guys in the office.

Here is the exact list (our personal thoughts are in the brackets):

1. Caffeine irritates the stomach lining and causes excess acid levels (bad)
2. Causes messages to pass around the body faster (good, I think)
3. Raises blood pressure (not so good)
4. Makes indigestion slower (not great news)
5. Stimulates blood circulation (quite sure this is good)
6. Stimulates the heart and nervous system (bad in the long run)
7. Makes blood sludgy and rubbish from fat in caffeine (sounds awful!)
8. Increases alertness and reduces tiredness (very good ‘side effect’)
9. Causes shaking hands (very irritating)
10. Causes simulation as a result of blood sugar release (not so bad)
11. Has a diuretic effect (won’t go there)
12. Can cause oversensitive pancreas (bad)
13. Can cause sleep deprivation (bad in most cases)
14. Can damage the respiratory system (dreadful)
15. Can prevent heart diseases (horary)

As you can see, this is a pretty mixed bag of results. Although there seems to be some pretty nasty stuff there, I wouldn’t say that there is enough to stop me drinking coffee.

So, for the time being, I’ll take my chances with getting an oversensitive pancreas and I’ll put up with the shaking hands so that I can enjoy a stimulated and energised day of work!
…oh, and let’s not forget how good coffee tastes.

Gripping social comment

Story: The film is a compendium of four stories which have a common theme: the search and assertion of individual identity. Nandita Das is a single woman who wants to experience the joys of motherhood by artificial insemination. Juhi Chawla is a displaced Kashmiri pundit who returns to her homeland to confront the ghosts of the past. Sanjay Suri has yet to bury the shadows of child abuse from his seemingly normal life. Rahul Bose doesn't know if the changing laws in India allow him to come out of closet and declare his alternate sexuality, loud and clear.

Movie Review: When you take up different stories and juggle with sundry characters, there has to be a string that binds them together and a leitmotif that holds the film. Director Onir doesn't err here. I Am is essentially an affirmative assertion of identity and an appropriation of private spaces in a society that has a tendency to use tradition as the most convenient whiplash to beat any and everyone into disturbing conformity. The film serenades the art of saying `No'.

Of course, everyone is bound to have his/her favourite story in the film, specially since all four aren't evenly crafted. But that's easy to understand why. The women have the softer tales which would necessarily lack the punch. But kudos to Nandita Das and Juhi Chawla for creating two spunky women of substance who know what they want and do not hesitate to acquire it. Again, they too encounter a lot of learning and re-configuring on the path to self-discovery.

Sanjay Suri's tryst with a pedophilic step father (Anurag Kashyap in a great cameo) is sensitive, subtle and truly disturbing, even as Rahul Bose and his encounter with traditional -- and brutal -- Indian scorn for alternate sexuality is chilling and stomach-churning. Put Abhimanyu Singh to play the brute (the typical Indian cop) and you know he'll do a fine job.

Watch I Am for talking unapologetically about real issues in real India. And also, for the performances.

Gripping road movie

Story: Manu Gupta (Vinay Pathak) and Mihika Mukherjee (Lara Dutta) are the most mismatched traveling partners who are forced to journey together from Mumbai to Delhi, when fate (or is it the maddening Mumbai traffic) pits them together. Mihika is an uptown investment banker. Manu is a saree trader from Chandni Chowk. It takes an arduous trip from Jaipur to Delhi for the two of them to bridge their cultural and class divide.

Movie Review: The story may be simple, straight and sprinkled with all the predictable twists and turns you can envisage in a drama that pitches a snooty, spoilt woman against a desi Indian male. There is the usual upturned nose on the part of Lara when she is forced to encounter the dust bowls of mofussil India, which include suffering her down-market companions burps and farts. And there is Vinay Pathak's familiar disdain for the lady's la-di-dah ways. Also, there are shades of the other cult road movie, Jab We Met, which cloud the originality of the script.

But hey, the film has so much soul, specially in the climax, it makes up for any shortcomings in story and vision. Also, the narrative has a sweet simplicity which transports you into the onscreen journey and makes you a willing witness to the bond-building between `bhaisaheb' and `behenji'. If Lara Dutta and Vinay Pathak carry the film through with their spontaneity, it is the fringe characters too who add spunk to the road show. And in case you need some more masala, there's Yana Gupta reinventing Zeenat Aman's classic item number `Laila o Laila'. Needless to say, Zeenat had more dum....

Google sued over Android data location collection

Two Michigan women are suing Google over location data collected by Android devices, a week after Apple was named in a lawsuit citing privacy violations with the iPhone logging similar data.

The $50 million lawsuit against Google seeks to stop Google from selling phones with software that can track a user's location, the Detroit News reported today.

The lawsuit was filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in Detroit on behalf of plaintiffs Julie Brown and Kayla Molaski, who are seeking class action status for the suit. Their lawyer, Steven Budaj, argues in the complaint that the tracking of Android owners' location "puts users at serious risk of privacy invasions, including stalking."

Google acknowledged last week that it collects location information--including GPS current location, timestamps, nearby Wi-Fi network addresses, and device IDs--from Android devices but said it was not traceable to a specific individual. Users can disable the GPS feature, but then they won't get as much function out of maps and other location-based services.

Google representatives did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment on the lawsuit this afternoon.

The lawsuit against Apple filed in Florida last week also seeks class action status and accuses Apple of violating privacy laws, as well as the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act by keeping a log of user locations without offering users a way to disable that.

The matter first came to light last week when two researchers said they had discovered that the iPhone collects and logs current and historical location information without user permission or warning, and stores it unencrypted on the device.

In addition to the lawsuits, the controversy has prompted lawmakers to seek an FTC probe of the issue and questions from attorneys general in Connecticut and Illinois.

After a week of silence, Apple finally spoke up about the matter, explaining in an FAQ that it was collecting the data to get more accurate location data for eventual use in a traffic database and blamed a software bug for storing an excess amount of it on the devices.

Shor in the City: Movie Review

The entire story of Shor happens over a span of just 11 days. Yet the film seems somewhat stretched, sporadically slow and remains silent on storytelling for its major runtime, until it makes substantial noise in its penultimate moments.

NRI Abhay (Sendhil Ramamurthy) has just shifted base in Mumbai but is traumatized by frequent extortion threats. Sawan (Sundeep Kishan), an aspiring cricketer, is in desperate need of big money to bribe the selection committee. Tilak (Tusshar Kapoor) is into the bootlegging business and yet honest enough to make genuine 'copies' of bestsellers. His friends, small-time crooks Ramesh (Nikhil Dwivedi) and Mandook (Pitobash), stumble upon a bag of arms which, directly or indirectly, changes each of their lives irreversibly.

The major problem with the film is that it takes a little too long to come to the point. The establishment of the character-conflicts is prolonged, till late in the second half. By then you are well-acquainted with their problems so the buildup just seems unnecessary, making the narrative monotonous to an extent.

Sendhil Ramamurthy's plot seems straight out of a 90s potboiler and never goes beyond being a regular revenge drama. Sundeep Kishan's track gets repetitive. The ethical improvement of Tusshar Kapoor driven by his half-baked romance with wife (Radhika Apte) goes completely tangent to the central plot. Lessons on Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist by his wife change his perception in life. And come to think of it, he never knew she was literate.

Having said that, the treatment to the scenes by writer-directors Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, still, has its moments of glory. The film has a smart and subtle sense of humour and scenes are never over-amplified through sound or edit effects, retaining the minimalistic feel. Picture a paradoxical scene over a Bandstand kinda backdrop, where a couple has a verbal spat while other pairs are indifferently indulged in casual caressing. Brilliant! Another funny scene is when Pitobash literally scares the shit out of a guy with his newly possessed gun. The bomb explosion scene, in the first half, has its hilarious and thrilling moments.

Despite having three individual tracks, the storytelling is neither episodic nor hyperlinked and remains unconnected till the climax. In fact, the climactic bank robbery is able to connect only two tracks while Sendhil's story remains detached with the entire event. But at the larger picture, the film is not merely about how the characters are correlated through an event but how the city of Mumbai (which is a central character per se) changes the lives of each irrevocably. By the end, the ways of the city compel the right guy to take the wrong path, the wrong guys to take the right, while the incorrigible continue to remain irreparable.

The beauty of the film essentially lies in its smartly handled climax. Abhay seeks vengeance, Tilak gains redemption, Sawan gets fortunate, Ramesh's life shifts tracks and the baddies get a taste of their own medicine. Set on the backdrop of the 11-day Ganesh Chathurti festival, the title ( Shor in the City ) smartly symbolizes that the excessive external festivities noise is much ado about nothing as compared to the hollow inner sentiments.

Sendhil Ramamurthy is persuasive as the troubled NRI who decides to settle scores. Tusshar Kapoor suits his character and plays his part well. Nikhil Dwivedi, despite being restrained, has a strong screen presence and is especially impressive in the concluding reels. Getting the best one-liners and playing to the gallery, Pitobash is the scene-stealer, though he goes a little overboard as the film progresses. Sundeep Kishan plays his part convincingly. Amit Mistry continues to show his flair for comedy. Preeti Desai is as unnecessary to the film as much as Sendhil Ramamurthy's solo topless scene. She fails to register. Radhika Apte is marred by weak characterization. Amongst the female leads, Girija Oak is remarkable and exudes raw sex-appeal.

Like the city, the film has its ups and downs. But Shor undoubtedly is a sound cinema. Worth a watch!

Mumbai: - Duncan Fletcher was born on September 27, 1948 in Rhodesia and raised in a family that comprised six children. All his four brothers played sport. Elder brother Colin excelled in cricket, hockey, rugby and squash.

- He captained Zimbabwe to an upset win over Kim Hughes' Australia in a 1983 World Cup game at Trent Bridge. Fletcher scored an unbeaten 69 before claiming 4 for 42 to send Australia crashing.

- In 1993, he became South Africa's domestic team Western Province's coach and met with immediate success, helping the team win the first-class and limited-overs competitions.

- Four years later, he was appointed coach of English county side Glamorgan. In his first year with them (1997), the county won the county championship - their first since 1969.

- After England's disastrous 1999 World Cup, Fletcher replaced David Lloyd as coach.

- His first series win as England coach came against Zimbabwe in 2000 on English soil.

- Later that year, he guided England to a series win over the West Indies for the first time in 31 years.

- Though England won in Pakistan (2000) and Sri Lanka (2001) during his tenure, Fletcher did not win a Test series in India.

However, he witnessed a drawn one-day series in the 2001-02 season when India lost the final game at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

- Fletcher reacted sharply to Sunil Gavaskar's criticism of his England team in 2002. The Indian batting legend opined that the English approach was a boring one for spectators. "Thank God it was a three-Test series and a five-Test one, for Indian cricket would have lost a great number of spectators seeing the fare dished out," Gavaskar wrote.

- In March 2004, England beat the West Indies 3-0 in the West Indies - the first time since 1967-68. Fletcher had the pleasure of seeing his pace attack of Steve Harmison, Matthew Hoggard, Andrew Flintoff and Simon Jones do well.

- Fletcher may have had some memorable Test wins including the 2005 Ashes triumph, but he didn't help England become a major force in one-day cricket, their triumph in the 2006-07 CB Series Down Under notwithstanding.

- After the 2005 Ashes triumph, Fletcher failed in Australia 2006-07 when England lost 5-0. England lost the series in the third Test at Perth.

- Former England fast bowler turned journalist Angus Fraser called for Fletcher's head in the Schofield Report. Fraser was part of the review committee.

Fletcher wrote: "I am not sure media people should be on the committee at all, but Fraser justified it by saying that he wanted to help English cricket.

"That is all well and good, but is it really helping English cricket by calling for the head of the England coach three days before an important World Cup against South Africa (2007)? No, it is not."

- In his autobiography, Behind the Shades, Fletcher revealed that Andrew Flintoff turned up for a practice session in Sydney in 2006-07 Ashes tour under the influence of alcohol. "I've supported a lot of players and I supported Andrew but then he drank again at the World Cup after what had happened in Australia," Fletcher wrote.

- Fletcher's stint as coach of England ended with the 2007 World Cup. Since then, he has worked with South Africa and New Zealand.

Govt warns Sathya Sai Trust: May step in if 'anything goes wrong'

As millions of devotees of Sathya Sai Baba await with bated breath to know who succeeds him and controls the powerful Sathya Sai Trust, the Andhra Pradesh government is learnt to have hinted to the members that it would be forced to interfere if there is a power struggle.

Prompted by Governor ESL Narasimhan, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy told the trust members to ensure there was no power struggle or misuse of funds, which would not only upset millions of devotees but also force the government to intervene.

The CM is learnt to have cited the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Act, 1959, which can be invoked to take over the trust.

Minister for Major Irrigation Dr J Geeta Reddy, who is coordinating with the trust members daily on behalf of the state government, said they would wait and watch for now. After the final rites of Sai Baba were performed on Wednesday morning, Governor Narasimhan and the CM discussed the issue. Later, the CM met a few important members of the trust.

“The government will be compelled to act if anything goes wrong in the trust,” the CM is said to have told the members.

“The government is hoping that the transition — with Sathya Sai Baba’s nephew J Ratnakar expected to take over the trust’s affairs — is smooth and without any interference from any claimants. We hope if Ratnakar is not chosen by the members to head the trust, whoever is nominated by them is acceptable to everyone concerned, including devotees,” an official accompanying the CM said.

Government officials fear a power struggle if the extended family members of Sai Baba lay claim to his legacy.

Meanwhile, a former student and close aide of the godman who had not been seen in the public since the announcement of his death made an appearance at his funeral. Aged around 30 years, Satyajit, who emerged in recent years as the one person closest to the Sai Baba, has been facing allegations of delaying treatment to the godman after he fell ill on March 28.

Local police officials in Puttaparthi said Satyajit was being protected by the ashram’s Seva Dal and not the police. “Satyajit is not a VIP for him to be given protection. He is a member of the Seva Dal and they are protecting him,” Puttaparthi Circle Inspector Naga Subbanna said.

There are allegations of a divide between the Andhra and Tamil members of the Sai Baba Trust. Satyajit hails from Tamil Nadu, like the secretary of the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust former IAS officer K Chakravarthi.

Sony May Not Have Confirmed Customer Data Theft Until April 26

A day after Sony revealed personal data had been stolen consumers are concerned about what may happen to their data next and angry with Sony for the slow release of information and the lack of details.

Sony may not have confirmed until April 26—a full week after discovering a major intrusion into its PlayStation Network—that consumer information had actually been stolen.

Angry Sony consumers criticized the company of not informing them their personal data had been stolen immediately after discovering the data breach on April 19. Sony shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity music services to investigate the breach and to prevent any future attacks, but did not provide any details about the cause or effects of the PlayStation Network outage or the data breach until April 26.

It’s already prompted at least one customer to bring a lawsuit against Sony. The first class action lawsuit on behalf of angry PlayStation Network members was filed by Kristopher Jones of Alabama on April 27 in the United States District Court for the North District of California. The lawsuit accuses Sony of breach of warranty, negligent data security and violations of consumers’ rights of privacy.

Patrick Seybold, the director of corporate communications and social media for Sony, clarified the timeline in a blog post on April 27. After shutting down the services, Sony brought in outside experts to help investigate how the intrusion occurred and to determine the nature and scope of the breach, according to Seybold. It took “several days of analysis” to understand what had happened, Seybold said.

"There’s a difference in timing between when we identified there was an intrusion and when we learned of consumers’ data being compromised," said Seybold.

Sony discovered “between April 17 and April 19” that an unauthorized individual had gained "illegal" access to personal information stored on the PlayStation Network and the Qriocity online music service. The accessed information included names, addresses, log-in and password credentials, password security answers, email addresses, and birth dates. The company wasn’t sure whether user purchase history and credit card information were compromised but warned users “out of an abundance of caution,” Seybold said.

“If your success is dependent on the loyalty and trust of your customers, you had better be protecting that asset. Investing in next generation security is not a “must have” if you value your data and your customers,” Harry Sverdlove, CTO of Bit9 wrote on the company blog.

It was possible that the attacker got into Sony’s systems via a phishing e-mail crafted using information readily available on social networks, according John Pescatore, a computer security analyst with Gartner. "They do their research on LinkedIn, Facebook and other social networks to gather personal information on a targeted group of people who are most likely to have administrative-level passwords to these systems," Pescatore said.

The phishing e-mail may have directed victims to a malicious site that downloaded keyloggers to steal login credentials, according to Pescatore.

“Once they log in, using a legitimate account, they have the keys to the kingdom, and the data goes flying out the door," Pescatore said. Sony has not provided any details as to how the breach happened.

While the specter of identity theft looms over the data breach, there is also the chance of attackers using the information to launch targeted spear phishing attacks to trick users out of even more sensitive data. The information taken from PSN “contains enough information to convince you the e-mail has been sent from someone you know and trust,” Paul Henry, a security and forensic analyst at Lumension, told eWEEK. Consumers should “exercise caution when receiving any email right now,” Henry said. Don’t click on any links, or open any attachments unless its delivery was expected, according to Henry.

The “vagueness” of the data breach provided the attackers the opportunity to exploit that data, Mandeep Khera, a CMO at Cenzic, told eWEEK. While it’s understandable that Sony had to get forensics done to find out how it happened, consumers have lost trust in the company, according to Khera. “Consumers trust big businesses like Sony to keep their data safe because of their well-known name in the electronics industry. Once that trust is gone, they may begin to look elsewhere,” Khera said.

Apple to start selling iPad 2 in India from April 29

NEW DELHI: Apple's iPad 2 will be available in Indian stores from Friday, just over a month after the company started selling the updated version of its popular tablet device in the United States .

The iPad 2, a thinner and faster version that features two cameras for video chat, is priced between 29,500 rupees and 46,900 rupees, depending on the model.

The device will be available through authorized resellers from 9 a.m. local time on Friday, a company statement said.

The model with 16 GB of memory that works only on Wi-Fi is priced at 29,500 rupees, while the one that can operate on both Wi-Fi as well as third-generation (3G) mobile networks costs 36,900 rupees.

Customers have the option to buy an iPad 2 with 16, 32 or 64 GB of memory and can choose a model that works only on Wi-Fi or on both Wi-Fi and 3G.

Research firm IHS iSuppli estimates Apple will ship 39.7 million units for all models of the iPad this year.

The first iPad - which went on sale a year ago - sold 300,000 units on the first day, 500,000 in the first week, and crossed the 1 million unit mark in 28 days.

The recent disclosure that Apple's iPhone and Google's Android phones track users locations has attracted a lot of attention.

The issue has even reached US parliament with US Congress and FCC looking into the issue. To garner Apple CEO Steve Jobs take on the issue a MacRumors reader reportedly emailed him seeking clarifications on the issue and at the same time hinting about a switch to Android. Jobs reportedly responded, claiming that Apple does not track users and the information is "false". He, however, said that Android does track users.

Q: Steve, could you please explain the necessity of the passive location-tracking tool embedded in my iPhone? It's kind of unnerving knowing that my exact location is being recorded at all times. Maybe you could shed some light on this for me before I switch to a Droid. They don't track me.

A: Oh yes they do. We don't track anyone. The info circulating around is false.

A pair of British security researchers recently said that the latest version of Apple's operating system for iPhone and iPad is constantly recording the location of the devices and storing the information in a hidden file.

Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden said the position-logging feature is contained in iOS 4. "Ever since iOS 4 arrived, your device has been storing a long list of locations and time stamps," they said in an article posted at the website radar.oreilly.com.

"We're not sure why Apple is gathering this data, but it's clearly intentional," the researchers said, adding that it raises a number of "security and privacy implications."

London: The official guest list for the British royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton was issued on Saturday, and it contained a mix of family and friends, as well as members of European royal families, and a few big name celebrities.

One obvious omission was Sarah Ferguson, the former wife of Prince Andrew, who has been largely frozen out of the royal family following a series of gaffes and misdemeanours.

The list is dominated by William and Kate's friends and family, together with European royals, leaders of British Commonwealth countries, and members of "the great and good."

Also on the list are people from the charities with which the royal couple are associated.

"Largely it's a traditional establishment wedding," commented AP royal consultant Jennie Bond.

Elton John and David Beckham, accompanied by their respective partners, top a very small list of celebrities.

Elton John was close to William's late mother Diana. And Beckham worked with William on England's failed bid to stage the 2018 World Cup.

Although William's aunt Sarah Ferguson has been omitted, her daughters Beatrice and Eugenie - as fifth and sixth in line to the throne - will be there.

Foreign leaders, including US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, were not invited, but royal officials have explained that the decision shouldn't be seen as a snub.

Aides say the wedding isn't technically a state occasion, as William is second in line rather than heir to the throne - so there's no protocol requiring key world leaders to be invited.

William has found space for all 27 members of his unit at the air base in Anglesey, Wales, where he works as a helicopter pilot.

One of his workmates is Sergeant Keith Best, who's accompanied the Prince on a number of search-and-rescue missions.

"It was a massive surprise when that nice golden envelope dropped through the letterbox," said Best. Altogether some 1,900 people have been invited to the wedding ceremony in Westminster Abbey.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Government has decided to build a grand sports museum to honour inconic Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said.

"Sachin has made the state proud by his achievements in cricket. His contribution in the recent World Cup was immense," Chavan said, at a function on Monday evening to present the state government's Shiv Chhatrapati State Sports Awards.

The state government has decided to build a grand sports museum in Tendulkar's name and befitting his stature, the Chief Minister said.

The government plans a new youth and sports policy and there is a proposal to set up 54 sports complex at tehsil level, he said.

Chavan felicitated 44 sportspersons with the Shiv Chhatrapati State Sports Awards.

Earlier this month, Chavan had informed the State Assembly that Maharashtra Government is going to recommend to the Centre that Tendulkar, who turned 38 on Sunday, should be given the 'Bharat Ratna' in view of his outstanding contribution to the game of cricket.

Sony unveils its first tablets in bid to compete with Apple's iPad

Sony revealed Tuesday two Google Android-based touchscreen tablets, which will released this fall in an attempt to catch up to Apple's year-long head start with the iPad.

The tablets, dubbed S1 and S2, were unveiled at a media launch in Japan, Reuters reports. Sony will attempt to leverage its successes in the gaming industry to drive sales of the tablets, as both the S1, which sports a 9.4-inch display, and the S2, which features two 5.5-inch displays, will be compatible with select PlayStation games.

Sony deputy president of consumer products and services Kunimasa Suzuki indicated that the devices will run the tablet-designed Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system, as he pulled a prototype from a jacket pocket at the launch.

In an effort to distinguish itself from the growing list of Android-based iPad competitors, such as the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab, Sony has developed two unique form factors for its tablets. The S1 has an "off-center of gravity form factor," while the S2 features a foldable dual-screen setup.

The two devices will be marketed under the "Sony Tablet" brand and will feature heavy cross-promotion of Sony's Qriocity media suite.

The S1 will feature a Tegra 2 processor, Wi-Fi and 3G/4G cellular data capability. IT will also include an IR port for AV controls with Sony's line of Bravia televisions and support for the Sony-initiated Digital Living Network Alliance standards. Sony held off on revealing further details on either the S1 or the S2, disclaiming that "design and specifications are subject to change without notice.

The devices are slated for a global release in the fall of this year.

In January, Sony surprised attendees of the Consumer Electronics Show when the company declared its intentions to take the No. 2 spot in the tablet market within a year, despite not having released a tablet.

Earlier this year, Sony unveiled the next-generation version of its PlayStation Portable, dubbed the NGP in hopes of striking back at Apple, whose popular iOS devices have quickly begun cannibalizing Sony's share of the gaming market.

The Japanese electronics giant also took the wraps off a partnership with Google and other Android handset makers that will produce the PlayStation Suite, an Android-compatible content platform that will bring both classic and new PlayStation games to the mobile operating system.

"Users will be able to enjoy PlayStation content on an open operating system for the first time in PlayStation history," the company said in a statement in January. The move is a break from precedent from Sony, which has preferred its own proprietary formats over open ones.

In April, research firm Gartner revealed that it expects Apple's iPad to continue to dominate the tablet market through 2015. The market is expected to grow to 294 million tablets in 2015, with Apple maintaining an estimated 47 percent market share.

Nilanjana S Roy: Untold stories - India's non-fiction

In the first chapter of The Emperor of All Maladies, Siddhartha Mukherjee starts with a quote from Shakespeare, and a personal story about a patient, Carla.

He runs through the conversation he will have with her, and notes ruefully that there is something rehearsed even about his sympathy, given the demands of the months he’s spent working as a cancer fellow: “In those ten indescribably poignant and difficult months, dozens of patients in my care had died. I felt I was slowly becoming inured to the deaths and the desolation — vaccinated against the constant emotional brunt.” Two paragraphs down, without ever losing sympathy for the individual struck with cancer, Mukherjee has moved deftly to Solzhenitsyn, to a bigger picture, using, as he writes, “the past to explain the present”.

Reading The Emperor of All Maladies before it won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction, I was struck, as were many other reviewers, by how polished Mukherjee’s writing was (“The emperors of exploration”, Business Standard, February 1, 2011). Mukherjee, a cancer physician and researcher, had no creative writing or journalistic background — the two traditional catchment areas for non-fiction writers. But in the middle of his busiest years as a surgeon and a cancer fellow, he had served a kind of apprenticeship — pieces by him had appeared in medical reviews (Nature, The New England Journal of Medicine) and in mainstream publications known for their demanding editorial standards (The New Republic, The New York Times). Mukherjee’s recording eye for detail, matched with a deep empathy for his patients and an ability to do the historical research required, made this not just a prize-winning book, but a classic and lasting work of non-fiction.

In 2010, when Basharat Peer’s memoir of Kashmir, Curfewed Night, was published, one of its most enthusiastic champions was William Dalrymple, who called Peer a “new star of Indian non-fiction”. A few months later, Dalrymple spoke of his excitement at what seemed to be a new trend — the slow shift towards non-fiction replacing our somewhat obsessive focus on Booker-winning novels and other fiction.

Samanth Subramanian, like Sonia Faleiro, is one of the new stars of non-fiction; Following Fish, narrative journalism exploring India’s coastline, remains one of the best food and travel books of recent times. “This is just the beginning,” he says. We both agree that a handful of authors and non-fiction books from the subcontinent isn’t enough to call a movement, yet.

But as Subramanian points out, what may be changing – and where Dalrymple is correct – is a sensibility, as our curiosity about our own stories is matched by the willingness to actually go out and tell them. “There’s never been a paucity of academic non-fiction – good or bad – in India,” Subramanian notes. “But general non-fiction, journalistic non-fiction hasn’t had much of an outlet.”

Even among the journalists, someone like Sonia Faleiro, who wrote Beautiful Thing after reporting on the lives of bar dancers for Tehelka, or even Suketu Mehta, whose Bombay biography Maximum City sparked a curiosity about Indian non-fiction seven years ago, narrative non-fiction is something you have to earn. Few Indian publications support essays longer than 1,500-2,000 words; and even fewer would offer that space to issues other than politics.

The Caravan, run by Jonathan Shainin and a crack team of writer-editors, who include author Anjum Hassan and former Random House editor Rajni George, is one of the few magazines that look for and nurture narrative non-fiction, aside from a handful of men’s magazines that occasionally commission lengthy essays. (You could make the argument that magazines like Esquire and Playboy contributed much more than centrefolds to US culture —by commissioning short stories, long interviews and long journalistic essays, they helped several generations of writers to survive and grow.)

It’s tempting to see Siddhartha Mukherjee’s Pulitzer triumph as confirmation of the Indian success story in non-fiction; but in a way, Mukherjee’s success as a writer is a very American, not Indian, success. What would it take to have a The Emperor of Maladies come out of India? More supportive publishing houses, more magazines with demanding editorial standards, more imagination and willingness to go after the untold stories on the part of writers? I don’t really have the answers, but it’s an interesting question.

Endnote: The release of the Ibn-e-Safi thrillers (Poisoned Arrow, Smokewater, The Laughing Corpse and Doctor Dread) could revive nostalgia for the days of “clean” blood-and-guts fiction. Ibn-e-Safi’s son says his father, already a well-known Pakistani writer when he considered writing the Jasoosi Duniya series, rose to the challenge when he was told that the books wouldn’t sell in India without sex and violence. He refused to include women, and his spy stories proved successful all the same.

There may have been precedent, though. Indian tastes ran to Alistair Maclean, whose thrillers were notable for his stern abjuration of romance. Maclean famously said that sex gets in the way of the action, a sentiment he may have borrowed from yet another creator of largely celibate heroes, Desmond Bagley, who said that sex gets in the way of the plot. How James Hadley Chase managed to juggle both will, presumably, remain a mystery.

Gripping thriller

Story: ACP Vishnu Kamath (Abhishek Bachchan) had hit rock bottom in his career and his personal life, when he suddenly gets a second chance at redemption. He is given the prestigious, yet dangerous mission of cleaning up Goa of its all-pervasive illegal drug mafia. Pitted against the powerful drug lord Lorsa Biscuta (Aditya Pancholi), a corrupt police department and a host of innocents trapped in the trade -- Bipasha and Prateik Babbar -- will the diehard cop succeed in this operation? He does find welcome help from the local DJ, Joki (Rana Daggubati) who wants to extricate the innocents, specially his girlfriend Zoey (Bipasha Basu) from the dragnet.
Movie Review: There's something about Abhishek Bachchan and his cop act. It always works, unlike most of his other screen avatars. Till date, Dhoom remains one of his most memorable performances, where his savoir faire as the sassy policeman stood up commendably to the charisma of the bad guys, John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan. Dum Maaro Dum reiterates the fact that Abhishek seems to be a natural charmer when it comes to slipping into the shoes of a quintessential somewhat crooked-somewhat straight cop. His body language, his dialogue rendition, his lazy zeal and laidback attitude, adds a cutting edge to the character of ACP Vishnu Kamath, Goa's desi Bruce Willis (Diehard) who plays the game according to his own rules.

And Abhishek isn't alone in crafting a host of riveting characters who lend a special cadence to the film. There is Prateik Babbar and Anaitha Nair's teen love story that goes awry, once Prateik gets embroiled in illegal activities. There is Bipasha Basu and Rana Daggubati's bindaas beach romance that lights up the screen intermittently. There is Mafioso Aditya Pancholi and his mean guy act which flashes fire and brimstone. And there is the cop camaraderie between Abhishek and his team that adds substance to the proceedings. All the characters are credible and immensely watchable.

Further more, there is the stylization of the film and its dramatic narration that makes it a compelling watch. The film slags in places and needs tightening, but the lull is followed by a tangy twist in the tale, which makes up for the occasional yawn. Shridhar Raghavan writes a thrilling cops and robbers tale which has some quirky banter scripted by Purva Naresh. Add to this Goa captured in glowing colours by cinematographer Amit Roy and a peppy music score by Pritam, and director Rohan Sippy gives you a film that keeps the popcorn crackling, till the very end. So much so, you don't actually mind the `potty' lyrics, as Deepika Padukone adds a dusky sheen to them with the Deepika shake. Of course, there's Vidya Balan too, with her winning smiles, in a brief cameo, proving once again that she's the most in-sync co-star for Abhishek Bachchan. Remember Paa?

Music: Midival Punditz pitches in an eclectic background score and Pritam Singh creates some peppy numbers.

Choreography: Deepika Padukone's title track simmers, despite the questionable lyrics.
