Release Date: April 19, 2013

Synopsis

An Arowana Studios presentation, produced by Prince Thampi and Directed by Unni Vijayan , this adaptation of Anita Nair's book, by the same name, is a gripping and heart warming story of redemption, forgiveness and second chances.

At the heart of the story is a single father, J.A. Krishnamurthy or JAK, as he is fondly called, played effectively by Adil Hussain; the story is woven around how JAK relentlessly follows a trail left by delicate clues to find out how his teenage daughter, Smriti (played by debutante, Maya Tideman) ended up on a hospital bed, almost dead. Helping JAK in his chase is a single mother Meera (played by Roshni Achreja), who is unable to make sense of her husband's callousness; he walks out on their marriage, out of the blue, leaving her to bring up their two growing children and care for her aging mother and grandmother, all on her own. Fate brings two searching souls in JAK and Meera together.

It is JAK's desperate attempt for closure on a gruesome incident affecting his daughter and his need for redemption that takes both Meera and him through a rocky trail that turns his life upside down. In the event it gives JAK a peek into his daughter's world. The subplot, subtly touches the subject of female foeticide and how fiercely guarded the issue is.

Ghanchakkar- Movie Previews

GhanchakkarCredits

Director: Rajkumar Gupta
 Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan
Banner: UTV Motion Pictures
Music: Amit Trivedi
Genre: ComedyRelease Date: June 28, 2013

Character Sketch

Emraan Hashmi aka Sanjay Athray aka Mr Ghanchakkar

Sanjay Athray is a vault breaker who has taken voluntary early retirement from his profession. His current behaviour is completely like that of an elderly retired person. He attends to his small garden early in the warning, watches TV most of the day and sips quality wine at night. He dresses in comfy cottons and is an absolutely unflappable cool guy. Sanju's demeanor changes after he comes out of his 'retirement' to be part of a heist with some other conmen who knew an ex-partner of his. Sanju is entrusted with the loot and he forgets where it is kept. He begins to forget a lot of other things too but his memory is extremely sharp when it comes to certain other things like anniversaries for example. As the pressure begins to mount to find the loot, a brutally honest, ultra cool Sanju suddenly starts to act drastically. He becomes extremely hassled and suspicious, prone to sarcasm and bouts of anger. It starts getting increasingly difficult to decide whether he is really affected by some sort of amnesia or is he just play-acting. Is Sanju suffering from some medical problem or is he making a 'ghanchakkar' out of all of us?

Vidya Balan aka Neetu Athray aka Mrs Ghanchakkar

It would be rather difficult to guess from her clothes that Neetu is a regular reader of Vogue, which she buys from the neighbourhood newspaper stand. It would also be difficult to guess from the taste of the dishes she makes that Neetu is very fond of cooking. And it is even more difficult to guess from her sweet demeanour that a fire-brand Punjaban lies trapped inside. The old adage "Opposites attract" describes her marriage to a T, when we compare Neetu to the love of her life, Sanjay. Neetu is not into comfy clothes, she is into fashion atrocities. She is exhibitive about her feelings and doesn't really enjoy the contemplative retirement that they are leading. She never thinks enough is ever enough, she believes life should be lived young when one IS young and everything from the TV to the apartment to family holidays should be kingsize. But as Sanju now observes her suspiciously, he begins to wonder is this loving homemaker for real or is she actually conning the cons?
